Prince Gilbert from the kingdom of Lyonesse travels to the kingdom of Rye to choose his bride. He is shocked to find that his future father- in-law, King Rupert, forces many of his subjects to wear facemasks. He also soon learns that the king's obsession with beauty extends to his two daughters, and although they are attractive on the outside, they are not so on the inside. Discouraged, the young prince disguises himself in his servant's clothes and hides out in the King's Garden where he meets a mysterious girl in a plain brown skirt and an old straw hat who steals his heart. This puts the girl in danger and threatens the future of his kingdom and hers. A modern fairytale for readers of all ages, Toadface is beautifully illustrated by watercolorist Kay Myer.
