What would you do if your world was falling apart and you discovered that your gods were to blame? Shadrick abandons his position as heir to Morning Mountain, leaving a dying queen with no one to succeed her but his blood-thirsty sister and his brother, the Babbling Prince. Saleen comes from Baulan, a land where women are valued so little, it has taken years for the men to notice how few girls are being born. When they do, their society begins to unravel. She finds herself in a treacherous land where women have become saleable commodities. The River people have a secret to keep. They rarely leave the seclusion of their refuge but Tal feels personally wronged by the gods. Other characters include a hapless horse-trader, a heartsick necromancer, and Old Boo; a trout who claims to be kin to both royalty and gods. Shadrick, Saleen and Tal cross a broken continent where clouds cry, demons dance, and gods feud with one another. Conduits open up in the river and transport the travelers across the land. Before they can face the gods, they must uncover the nature of reality. If they fail, reality will come undone. Bad Gods skirts the line between gravity and whimsy and between fantasy and science fiction. Issues of gender roles and class disparity are touched upon in an adventure that is infused with clashing philosophies.
