"Amigo," a ten year old boy living during the 1935 Depression period, son of a welfare recipient, befriends a group of carnival people performing in town, and he is subjected to a series of startling as well as pleasant events that contribute to his character growth and development. He is naive due to the absence of any meaningful, learning experiences. Lupe, Amigo's armless Mexican friend and mentor, is a man of honor and integrity, and he proves to be an effective role model for the lad, demonstrating a great capacity for persevering through pain and suffering. Arlene, song and dance performer, an attractive young lady with strong moral values, also befriends the boy. She is in love with Lupe, determined to overcome his objections to a romantic relationship between them. Comanche Bill. master sharpshooter, whip man, safe robber, is insanely in love with Arlene, using whatever cruel and vicious advantage he can to destroy Lupe, even physical abuse to coerce her to commit herself to him only.
