Asked to take over a case where the government seeks custody of a teenage boy, she discovers the case makes no sense.
She discovers he is a prodigy who built a portal enabling glimpses of what could be. The government wants to gain control of the pathways to alternative worlds his portal creates.
Subsequently she and the prodigy visit two futures that would be increasingly accomplished for her that could result from the decisions she is making.
Together they visit the past, before she or even her parents were born, to learn from her young grandparents how their choices determined her life's trajectory.
Only J'ne can help the prodigy find a place where he can be what he wants to be, and along the way, finds that she is searching for the same thing.
