Jamilah, scarred and traumatized by Somali tradition and ethnic conflict before being raised in the Midwest, is living in the fires of a personal hell that brutally feed on her body and heart, incinerating self-respect and dignity. Vincent, a man emotionally immobilized by tragic failure and condemned by the public, seeks solace in stonework. Trevor, a young boy ostracized for his stuttering, surrounded only by wealth and self-absorbed parents, is starving for a friend. Worlds apart they live until a priest sees past the utter filth that covers Jamilah and reflects her innocence back to her; a surgeon, by chance, wipes away the barriers Vincent has made to hide the festering wound in his heart; and Trevor, in seeking, finds friendship. When their paths cross, their lives become eternally entwined. But in life are all things good and evil. They are within us and they surround us. They come from above and from below.
