Cranford is the best-known novel written by Elizabeth Gaskell. It was published in 1851 as a serial in a magazine edited by Charles Dickens. The fictional town of Cranford is modelled on Knutsford in Cheshire, which Gaskell knew. The novel was adapted for television by BBC in 1951, 1972 and in 2007.
