John Mortimer, a student of divinity, defies his pacifist father and like thousands of others, signs up to fight the Germans in Autumn 1914.

Showing natural bravery and leadership skills, Mortimer is soon promoted to sergeant and takes part in numerous night raids - as well as in the murderous Battle of Loos.

The war takes a toll on his body and spirit - but he falls in love with Lisette, a café-owner. Together they share a romantic interlude in Paris, away from the turmoil of the front.

But the realities of war encroach again and Mortimer takes part in the Battle of the Somme. Severely wounded, he is hospitalized and then sent to the Middle East.

Mortimer has to battle a hostile environment, as well as a vicious and unrelenting enemy.

Eventually Mortimer is posted back to the Western Front. A major offensive awaits.

He can only hope that Lisette is waiting for him too.
