Scum are overwhelmingly male and under eighteen years old.) Alexis is a sensitive fourteen year old girl. She is a poet and only understands the world through her writing. She is adopted by the scummies and they watch out for her like a sister. Mostly because when she found Gauge, a traumatized fourteen year old war veteran scummy that lost his leg in the Puerto Rican coup, she nursed him back to health.
