For 20-year-old Sandy Chambers, the spring of 1968 was all about making love, not war. She wanted to let her hair blow in the breeze; to wear bell-bottomed jeans that frayed from being dragged behind her bare feet; and to experience free, no-attachment sex. The trouble is, the man she chose to gift her virginity to turned up dead the next day. Her discovery of her lover's body links Sandy to a world where drug lords, resource companies, and family feuds do battle with the new-world values of the hippy generation. A combination of guilt and curiosity prompts Sandy to search for her lover's killer, bringing her up against the efforts of RCMP Corporal David Moore of the Ucluelet detachment and two out-of-town specialist officers from the major crimes unit in Victoria. Set on the remote west coast of Vancouver Island, this mystery story is the first of a series which will revolve around fictional characters living and working at the original Wickaninnish Inn, built on the south end of Long Beach in 1964, during the historical transition that resulted in the creation of Canada's first west coast marine national park.
