Description
This Australian novel, written in something of an existential style, is actually a form of who-done-it-but with a twist! It portrays vignettes in the life of a private school principal as he negotiates a life that is not of his making alone.
Being emmeshed in the justice systems of the land and the court of public opinion was never intended to be pleasant. He dare not think of any higher court. Yet, the machinations of the soul, one's own court of private opinion, may provide the greatest discomfort. Or not. He has been destined to face them all. Reconciling moral dispositions with desires, desires with facts, and facts with fantasies, always provides rich grounds for reflection. And for planning-planning to reduce pain in all its forms and increase a pleasant contentment but a contentment always tinged with a certain frisson.
