Gastrointestinal surgery is a surgical method used for the treatment of diseases associated with the digestive system. The parts of the body involved in digestion are stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas and rectum. There are several gastrointestinal conditions, like appendicitis, diverticular disease, gallbladder disease, hernia, inflammatory bowel disease and rectal prolapse, which can be treated through gastrointestinal (GI) surgery. This surgery can be either open GI surgery or minimally invasive surgery, depending on the health condition of the patient. Minimally invasive surgery involves smaller incisions and camera to view inside the body. Nephrectomy, foregut surgery, adrenalectomy and splenectomy are some common types of minimally invasive GI procedures. Open GI procedures such as abdominal surgery, Nissen fundoplication and Whipple procedure are performed with larger incisions, which leads to larger scars, more pain and takes a longer time for recovery.
