Buchanan was ""the deepest intellectual Scotland produced in the sixteenth century,"" according to historian Keith Brown. During the Scottish Reformation, his philosophy of opposing regal usurpation was widely adopted. The ease with which King James VII was overthrown in 1689, according to Brown, demonstrates the influence of Buchananite ideals.
