Sal and Deanna, two young teachers in the public school system working in Baltimore City, Maryland, are blessed with their first child Katie. One year later they have a son, Gino. However, both Sal and Deanna notice that Gino is developing much slower than his sister Katie. The young family embraces the challenge with unwavering love and commitment. Mother, father, and sister find the strength to support Gino's desire to attend public high school. During Gino's journey, his father who is also the varsity football coach, uses innovative communication methods to overcome Gino's limited use of speech. Over this same time period his mother becomes an authority on the subject of special needs children. Deanna then works to change how the public school system recognize this problem as she advocates change.
