Description

The book *Mirrors Speak* examines the most important documents: An inscription on a clay vessel from the 1st century BCE reveals the self-designation of the Lazki (Lazi) people, who have their own state on the island of Lesbos. An inscription on a jug from the Dipylon culture confirms Herodotus's account of Cyrus the Great's punishment of the Lydians: "The Lazka people must wear shorts, heels, and engage in petty trade." The "Bronze Liver from Piacenza" is not a sacred object for the training of haruspices-diviners-but rather a map of the Aegean Sea basin. The text on the "Lead Seal from Maliano" indicates that the Lazka people established their own state in 332 BCE. Short inscriptions on bronze mirrors detail the migration of the Laz people to Italy, the construction of the Acropolis, a domestic scene, a joke-fortune-telling using rose petals-as well as the Hellenes' sympathy for the tribes exiled from Lydia. The name of the Laz people (Laz) has been identified; they currently live in the territories of Georgia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. The findings confirm the historical fact of the existence of a Turkic-language script in the 1st century BCE.
