It is no surprise that Phippsburg became a major shipbuilding center. Both Phippsburg's history and development were greatly influenced by the area's geographical features. Its uneven, rocky landscape made farming difficult; many turned to the sea for their livelihoods, while others developed lumber mills and ice-harvesting operations. Phippsburg's location on a major river encouraged the development of commerce and shipbuilding, and local ice and lumber were exported worldwide in Phippsburg-built ships. Its breathtaking, rugged scenery made Phippsburg a resort destination for many.
