The Thousand Years War between the Abrhaani and the Eniila may have finally ended, but a new threat emerges from the Nethera, who disguise themselves as gods. These demons work in the shadows, manipulating events until they are ready to strike and enslave the Abrhaani and Eniila species. Only one man recognizes the impending danger.
Rehaak, an Abrhaani sage on a twenty-year quest for truth, receives a divine visitation. The Creator, Aarda's rightful God, gives Rehaak a prophetic vision of his people's destruction in the Nethera's hands. When Rehaak tries to warn his people of the danger of worshiping false gods, a riot erupts in their capital city. The Abrhaani religious establishment blames Rehaak, brands him as a heretic, and banishes him to the farthest region of Khel Braah. Rehaak abandons his calling and becomes an apothecary until he encounters an older Abrhaani woman named Isil.

Isil rescues Rehaak and urges him to gain the trust of the Abrhaani. She tells Rehaak about the Aetheriad, an ancient book that can confirm his authority and help convince their people to overthrow the Nethera. Rehaak is initially resistant until he rescues Laakea, a teenage Eniila warrior fleeing his home.
Since the Abrhaani are his people's mortal enemies, Laakea mistrusts Rehaak. Despite their mutual suspicion, Rehaak nurses the boy to health, and the youngster warms to the Sage and his friend, Isil. Once they set aside their prejudices, the three outcasts form a family and find healing through their relationship.

Rehaak has found allies who believe in him and give him a chance to fulfill his calling. Laakea has people who accept him, although he is the offspring of their traditional foes, and Isil has an adopted son, replacing the one she lost. Together, they must unite, defeat corrupt leaders and deadly assassins, and stop the Nethera from plunging Aarda into darkness. Failure will mean annihilation, but their unity gives them strength.
