Description

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. At 2,475 carats (495 g), the Rajaratna Ruby is one of the world's largest ruby crystals, but is more of specimen than gem quality. An 18,696 carats (3.739 kg) crystal exists and there is a 21,450 carats (4.29 kg) piece from Myanmar. The "Chaiyo Ruby" is another large example, weighing 109,000 carats (22 kg). The ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). The red color is caused mainly by the presence of the element chromium. Its name comes from ruber, Latin for red. Other varieties of gem-quality corundum are called sapphires. The ruby is considered one of the four precious stones, together with the sapphire, the emerald, and the diamond.
