This story of two artisans, John Kelly and Margaret Marrey is intertwined with the political forces that shaped Ireland during the 1880s when the UK was divided by "The Irish Problem". Some savvy Irish politicians wangle an agreement from Liberals to set Ireland on a path to independence. A better life appears to be emerging for John, Margaret and all Irish. However, the delicate agreement is upended when the Phoenix Park Murders trigger a backlash by English landowners. Mass arrests of Fenians, like John are forced to flee or face imprisonment. Margaret must endure many hardships as she must escape by a separate path. Months later in a distant land they rejoined and built the better life they were denied in their homeland.
