Urzites - telepathic animals of many species found โoriginally only on the southern island of Urz. โReceptives - humans who are able to hear the โUrzites. Only about one person in eighty or ninety is a โReceptive. Most Receptives can only hear the animal โwho has chosen to be their partner, although there have โbeen recorded instances of very rare people, โSuperReceptives, who can hear more than one Urzite. โThe Warden Corps - a government-sanctioned force โwithin which the Receptive-Urzite pairs function. The โWardens and their Urzite partners are mostly used as โespionage agents and scouts in the ongoing war with the โneighbouring nation of Zeranda, although some are also โinvolved in search and rescue and also in recruitment and โthe finding of new Receptives.โThe next Urzite stepped forward. And the next. And โthe next. I tell you, it doesn't sound all that hard, just โstanding there repeating that spell, but it was exhausting โwork. Urzite followed Urzite followed Urzite, small โones, big ones, young ones, old ones; cats, dogs, horses, โdonkeys, birds, rats, lizards, monkeys. โI stopped noticing them after a while. They just โbecame a blur. I do remember that I did Umbis, though, โand Sanpo, who was quite absurdly grateful, and, of all โUrzites, Madame Uritta's Chym. I couldn't help but โwonder what she'd think of all this.โBy the time lunchtime was over I was so exhausted I โwas about ready to fall off my wall and it was getting โreally difficult to get the words of the spell in the right โplaces. However, I must have taught at least fifty Urzites โto read, possibly twice that many. The crowd in the โcourtyard had thinned to just the last few hopefuls and โquite a number who'd stayed as spectators, and as I โlooked about I saw all the remaining candidates step up โto one of the other spell-casters. โAmazingly, everyone who had turned up had been โprocessed. I was quite proud of us, really. That was a โvery good day's work. I hopped down from my wall and โmade my weary way over to where Naya stood talking โto Garina and Annana. Stumpy and Syana were already โthere, and as I approached, Hoo swept in and took up โher usual place on Stumpy's head. โAt first, I couldn't see Mewla, but then Naya moved โand I spotted her in her accustomed place in her arms. It โseemed we were all here. Oh, hang on, where was โThimni? Even as I looked around, there was a clatter of โhooves on cobbles and Thimni came bounding up, โlooking disgustingly energetic. How could she possibly โgallop like that when I felt about as limp as a wrung-out โrag?โโ"That was fun, wasn't it?" she said as she skidded to โa halt next to me. "It's going to change things around โhere now that every Urzite can read. I intend to โrecommend that the first thing they all read is the Articles โof Incorporation. I read them last night, and they're quite โan eye-opener. There'll be no excuse for denying Urzites โtheir rights now."โI rolled my eyes at Syana, who grinned. Trust Thimni โto make this an intellectual exercise. I swear, that goat is โthe most intelligent person I know, and that includes all โthe humans.โIn 'Naya', Naya related how she came to be a โWarden. Now, join Slink the fox; a bit of a rascal, โsomewhat greedy, rather highly-strung, and locked in an โongoing battle with Mewla the cat, as he takes up the โtale and tells the next part of the story in his own words, โas the team begin their training and settle into life as โAssigned Urzites.โ
