Description

Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. SXM is a software transactional memory system under development at Microsoft Research. The SXM API is exposed via managed code and is used to synchronize access to shared memory without using locks. It achieves mutual exclusion using database-like atomicity transactions. SXM uses the Reflection and dynamic code generation capabilities of .NET Framework to emit CIL code to enable atomic transactions on shared data structures directly at runtime. SXM has been written in C#. In computer science, software transactional memory (STM) is a concurrency control mechanism analogous to database transactions for controlling access to shared memory in concurrent computing. It is an alternative to lock-based synchronization. A transaction in this context is a piece of code that executes a series of reads and writes to shared memory. These reads and writes logically occur at a single instant in time; intermediate states are not visible to other (successful) transactions. The idea of providing hardware support for transactions originated in a 1986 paper and patent by Tom Knight.
