Description

A dog-eat-dog society where a Lion today may easily become a carcass tomorrow for the vultures to feast on is this society which is the central theme of this story. Young Boman made several attempts to gain admission into the university, but to no avail. He finds a friend during his struggle, and they became very close. She assisted him to get an offer to study accounting in a university far away from home but could not handle the disappointments leading to the taking of her own life just before her offer to study medicine was out. Years later, a married version of Boman even faces more challenges, not only of life, but challenges that are peculiar to the Nigerian society that he lives in. Navigating such ruthless survival involves battles with his landlord to avoid intimidation and extortion, battles with crooked policemen, escapades of transportation frauds, the scavenging nature of greedy relatives and guests during wedding preparations and celebrations, thrift collection fraud, highly corrupt public services and gross dishonesty in virtually any human interaction that may yield materially profitable outcomes. In all the struggles, his wife remains his backbone and ultimate support system. From his young days till present, Boman has been an advocate of an orderly, corrupt-free and transparent society. Due to this, he has been frustrated on several occasions; has physically fought for his right; has faced disappointments; suffered mob action from a setup; stood his ground against unfairness and injustice and has always been direct, outspoken and fearless against malpractices and corruption. But is Boman innocent? Is he clean, himself? Is he immune to the decadence and rot around him? Is his wife as tolerant as she seems towards her husband? Find out as your journey through this story that brings to life the social and moral decadence of the societies of the third world country, Nigeria. The Devil's orchid is an intriguing story full of action that depicts an environment that is infested by "immoral carnivores" where everyone is a threat to everyone. This story is a near-accurate narration of the realities of a typical struggling suburban area of the Nigerian society. Therefore, almost all (if not all) of its middle-class and below middle-class citizens will relate to the narrated circumstances of this book.
