Description

This book is about demography. Puerto Rico is a terrirory that for centuries has been unable to chart its own destiny or make its own choices. It's an area where people go to war without a right to vote for their Commander in Chief, the President of the United States. Puerto Rico has been a colony of the United States since 1898 and before that a colony of Spain. The first chapter of the book include the reasons for the population decline in Puerto Rico and the role of colonialism in the demographic changes. These chapters covered the exodus of Puerto Ricans to the United States, the reasons for the mass emigration, and changes in births and mortality patterns. In the next chapters, I presented information related to the aging of the population and its implications, especially to the economy. I describe the challenges and opportunities that come with the aging of the population and explain what Puerto Rico will experience, if there is not a plan to address these challenges.
