Darkness has covered the Earth for thousands of years. The people of Caedmon's world have embraced this darkness for so many generations they have surrendered their ability to see. Every person leads a blind existence, every one except for Caedmon. This young man was born with not only eyes that see, but a light that shines from his chest, illuminating the ever-present darkness around him. What would seem like advantages in this world, his sight and light instead bring only shame and ridicule upon the young Caedmon. A culture made by the blind for the blind, one in which the heightened senses of hearing, touch, taste, and smell have left no place for the sense of sight, leaves Caedmon ill-equipped to function as a normal citizen. Now, he lives a lonely and handicapped existence where not even his parents know what to do with him. One question burns inside Caedmon's soul: am I the only one?This question leads Caedmon on an adventure that changes not only his own life, but the lives of everyone on Earth. He pairs up with an unlikely companion and finds they are citizens of a world that is much larger than the one he grew up in. They discover that although it seems there is no end to the darkness of the Earth, turning from blindness to sight is a choice, and even the long reign of darkness may be overthrown someday soon.
