As the novel's two protagonists, Professor David (Dai) Harries, a space scientist at the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology (UWIST) and Wing-Commander William (Bill) Drummond, a serving RAF fast-jet pilot on loan to NASA soon discover, the force that defeated the Martians is very much alive and intent on abandoning the dying red planet in favour of Earth. The first alien incursions occur not long after Discovery II/c's arrival back in Earth orbit and before long Great Britain, the chosen arrival point of the alien intelligence, is fighting for its very existence.
