Description

In this moving selection of her poems, Selma Turner Tate gives us much to think about: how we've lived our lives, loved our families, and paid tribute to our heroes. A spiritual theme runs through each poem, the result of a life spent dedicated to the church. The wisdom she gained and shared through her life is captured in her poetry, as she says in "The Poet's Fountain Pen":
Poet's Fountain Pen gives life,
Filled with deepest depth of soul,
And freely flows from heart and mind,
The poet lives in the scroll.

Here you will find explorations of the family as in the poem that gives this collection its name, The Thread We Weave:
The Family Thread
Each family member dreams in plans for future,
Each dream has a design that fits therein,
When drawn together all the hues show beauty,
And make the whole complete in family blend.

Selma Tate began writing poetry while visiting with her daughter and grandchildren in New York City nearly 30 years ago. In this lovingly assembled collection you will find her exulting in nature, and her encouragement to all of us to live life to the fullest. Through the years she has crafted her responses to life's joys and crises in poems that acknowledge life is not always smooth sailing, as in "Unwinding Life"
Roll back your life,
The spool unwinds,
Sometimes raveled,
Some knots in the line,

She's a keen observer of life's historic triumphs and pays respects here to the first African American Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall:
In this life we paint a sign,
The impact of our living.
His sign, in Color brightly shines,
In justice, love and giving.

As well as the first African American President of the United States:
I Never
thought I'd ever see,
A President who looks like me.

In The Thread We Weave, Selma Turner Tate has given us the wonderful gift of her insight and poetic grace. This book is poetry to live by, a devotional to cherish:
O Lord, My God, I greet this day,
With grateful heart, I humbly pray,
For Thou hast brought me through the night,
To wake to Morning's Beauty Light.
