Don looked through his back window and spotted a strange man dressed in dark clothing next door. He spotted the man just as he tilted his head to avoid hitting the lintel as he sauntered through the kitchen door, leaving it open. Horror gripped him as he watched the stranger and wondered what evil deeds were committed inside the neighbor's home.

He signaled his friends, Jonathan and others, and together they eventually organized a special kind of community service: a neighborhood watch. They patrolled the streets and soon learned that the man, a burglar, crept into the bedrooms of couples as they slept, and stole precious items. They called him the Window Cracker. Their task, pursued at enormous risk, at first without police help or communication services, was to capture the culprit and deliver unto him all that he deserved. It was dangerous. Men died in the nightly hunt. Yet intimate relationship grew from a chance meeting, and much was talked and laughed about.
When the news media revealed the extent of the problems in the community and police inertia, an ambitious superintendent of police quickly assigned a special squad to work with the men. A strange thing happened then. The perpetrator they identified and eventually caught was a man known to the superintendent of police and his wife, both of whom owned and operated a private business. As the men probed and got closer to solving the problem, questions arose about the superintendent's involvement, the business, and the role it played in the criminal's escapades.
