Set against the backdrop of student unrest in 1969, JD, a new bartender at historic Cold Spring Tavern in the mountains high above the old mission town of Santa Barbara is befriended by a man everyone knows simply as Timer; a cowboy of indeterminate age who works at the largest dude ranch in the valley.
