Camilla Rivers has left her life and love behind to keep herself safe and save Nick Ludlow from torturous worry. After her life is threatened, they both agree it is safer for her to go stay with her father, though Nick has made it clear that he can't know her location, and no contact between them would be best until it was safe for her to return. She's devastated upon arriving at the Towers ranch in Montana. Still healing from a gunshot wound, she has to make it through one day at a time.

When Camilla puts her trust in Randin Towers, he takes care of her wounds, both physical and emotional. She begins to find safety in Randin, and she relies on him in moments of extreme heart-ache and hopelessness. As she hopes for word from Nick, she tries to be strong but has doubts about his love for her. She worries it may not be enough to last through this difficult situation. Memories of Nick take over, reminding Camilla just how much she loves and needs him.

Meanwhile, Randin is slowly becoming the person in Camilla's life that she depends on most. He is funny, charming, sweet, and though Camilla tries not to be attracted to him, his blond hair and insanely blue eyes are hard to ignore. As time drags on, she works her way out of her sensitive state, but finds that she can no longer deny how close she's grown to Randin.
