Developed for a series at Willow Creek entitled "Why?," this scene specifically addresses the issue of "Why Capital Punishment?" Throughout the scene two mothers, with no spoken lines, are on either side of the stage and are taking clothes and precious items out of two dressers and packing them away in boxes. A narrator, downstage center, tells their stories in simple, short sentences. The mothers are packing the belongings of their deceased adult children. As the scene progresses, we discover that one of the mothers had a daughter who was murdered by the son of the other mother. The son died due to lethal injection. We are reminded that both children, the innocent victim and the guilty murderer, are loved by a mother. Without taking a position on the issue of capital punishment, the scene simply and poignantly portrays that deep pain and loss is experienced by both moms.
